What kinds of dog toys and cat toys do dogs and cats really like?

This article is not about any specific dog toys, cat toys or pet toys in particular, but rather is about the kinds of toys that dogs and cats seem to enjoy the most. This is not an in-depth study of any kind, but is based entirely on personal observations.

Dog Toys

Most dogs seem to like dog toys that they can chew and/or tug on! Many also like balls and/or Frisbees to catch, fetch and return. For puppies, of course, it is critical to find the kinds of dog toys that they will enjoy chewing (into pieces, if necessary) to save the rest of your belongings from those (sometimes) little teeth!

I remember seeing a documentary on how they trained airport drug sniffing dogs. One of their biggest rewards that they got was a (just right) "chewable" dog toy to play with when they did their job (along with lots of praise, of course, and a small treat, I believe). This is a majorly big thing for them! Sorry, I don't know the specific types of materials used for these (if someone reading this knows a little more about this, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will update this article with the details...)

Our dogs always liked the "right sized" and right textured balls also. Some would stand the test of time, others... well, they would need to be replaced often.

Cat Toys

Cats are so particular! But, they do have some common traits and many seem to like cat toys that they can bat around and that move in strange ways. Some hanging items and twistable pipe cleaners are often very entertaining. One of our cats favorites (other than live mice! :-) ) are those little laser light pens.

Often, a simple string (with or without and object on the end) can provide quite a bit of entertainment. Regardless of the cat toys that your cat chooses, they will, of course, let you know when they have grown weary of your attempts at entertainment and will just get bored and quit after some amount of time (if you don't give up first...). :-)

If you keep in mind some of the simple basics, when looking for that perfect pet toy, you will have a much better chance of getting the dog toy or cat toy that your pet actually wants and will play with!
